The organization represents public sector tourism bodies, from most countries I the world and the publication of its data makes possible comparisons of the flow and growth of tourism on global scale. the transfer of tourism expertise to developing countries is one of its fundamental tasks. As an executing agency of the UN development programs, it contributes to the sustainable development goals of nation. Acting on requests from member governments, it secures financing, local experts, and carries out all types of tourism advance projects.
It is the only inter-governmental body that offers membership to the operating sector and in this way becomes a unique contact point of discussion between government officials and industry leaders. Affiliate members include retailer travel agents, tour operators, airlines and other transport companies likewise accommodation industries, banks, media groups, consultancies, educational and research institutes, local and regional tourism boards, and travel industry associations. UNWTO plays a role in promoting the development of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism, paying particular attention to the interests of developing countries. Structure of UNWTO
1. General Assembly: The General Assembly is the principal gathering of the United Nation World Tourism Organization. It meets every two years to approve the budget and program of work, and it debates in various topics of vital importance to the tourism sector. Every four years it elects a Secretary-General. The General Assembly is composed of full members and associate members. Affiliate members and representatives of other international organizations participate as observes.
2. Regional Commissions: United Nation World Tourism Organization has six regional commissions-Africa, the Americas, East Asia and the pacific, Europe, the Middle East and South Asia. The commissions meet at least once a year and are composed of all the full members and associate members from that region. Affiliate members from the region participate as observers.
3. Executive Council: The Executive Council is UNWTO's governing board responsible for ensuring that the organization carries out its work and adheres to its budget. It meets at least twice a year, which is composed by members and elected by the general assembly in a ratio of one for every five full members. As host country of its headquarter, Spain has a permanent seat on the Executive Council. Representatives of the associate members and affiliate members participate in executive council meetings as observers.
4. Secretariat: The Secretariat is led by Secretary-General Taleb Rifai of Jordan, who supervises about 110 full-time staff at UNWTO's Madrid Headquarters. These officials are responsible for implementing UNWTO's program of work and serving the needs of members. The affiliate members are supported by a full-time Executive Director at the Madrid Headquarters. The Secretariat also includes a regional support office for Asia-Pacific in Osaka, Japan< financial by the Japanese Government. The official languages of UNWTO are Arabic, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
Objectives of UNWTO
☞ To play a catalytic role in promoting technology transfers and international cooperation, in stimulating and developing public-private sector partnerships and in encouraging the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for tourism, with a view to ensuring that member countries, tourist destinations and businesses maximize the positive economic, social and cultural effects of tourism and
☞To promote and development of tourism with a view to contributing to economic development, international understanding, peace, prosperity and universal respect for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction to either race, sex, language or religion.
☞To establish and maintain an effective collaboration with the appropriate organs of the United Nations, and its specialized agencies as well.
☞To highlight importance of tourism trade and growth in the poorest countries, as well as for jobs creation and in encouraging investment in green infrastructure.
☞To undertake activities are supporting adaptation, mitigation and new technology regarding underscoring the carbon emissions.
☛To play a central role in promoting the development of responsible and sustainable tourism, paying particular attention to the interests of developing countries.
☞To seek a cooperative relationship with and participation in the activities of the United Nations Development program, as a participating and executing agency.
Functions of UNWTO
☞To constant review of tourism trends and developments and exercising vigilance over changes in world economic and social conditions affecting tourism, market fluctuations and maintenance of standards within the tourism sector.
